Job Summary

This role will oversee critical aspects of software development for Photonic’s industry-pioneering quantum computers. You will drive the progress of software teams in core development in several key areas. Examples include, but are not limited to, classical and quantum simulation, Big Data and analytics, telemetry, interfaces to classical systems (e.g., cloud), job scheduling and resources, applications development, compiler and assembler development, UX/UI user interfaces, algorithms and more. The Director, Software Engineering will guide teams in making schedules that are both ambitious and achievable, understanding the balance between delivering regular releases and the perfection of design.

What we need you to do

  • Lead and mentor high-performing software teams responsible for the development, design, and optimization of the software components necessary for truly scalable quantum computing
  • Contribute to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new fault-tolerant quantum computing systems
  • Build the team’s capabilities in the key software components surrounding our quantum silicon processors.
  • Collaborate with other teams – including hardware, operations, quantum processors, and integrated photonics – to define software requirements and influence strategy
  • Accelerate the growth of a high-performing engineering team that is strong both in technology innovation as well as in best practice engineering
  • Ensure the software engineering teams are set up for success, utilizing best practices in agile methodology, and using tools like JIRA
  • Implement software management tools and processes to enable reliable builds, releases, and feature experiments
  • Manage teams and projects through the product development process from concept to transfer
  • Support technical evaluation of design requirements /constraints and guide teams in developing concepts, evaluating risks, and making effective and timely design decisions
  • Manage resource allocation and budgets effectively across multiple projects
  • Recruit, hire, and retain top software engineering and DevOps talent

What you bring to our team

  • 7-10 years as an engineering manager with responsibility for directing and managing cross-functional technical teams
  • Undergraduate or master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience working with multi-disciplined team members in a research and development environment
  • Experience managing software teams with skills ranging from compiler development and low-level programming to distributed and multi-tiered systems, algorithms, databases, data structures, object-oriented design, and mathematics (linear algebra and statistics)
  • Experience working with Agile methodologies, particularly Scrum
  • Proven record of accomplishment of delivering software products on-time and on-budget
  • Experience in creating and managing development plans and schedules, including setting clear objectives for development teams
  • Experience with configuration management, product lifecycle management (PLM) tools
  • Outstanding teamwork and leadership skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Experience working in a start-up environment is a plus

 

Bonus

Photonic is designing the world’s first quantum processor in silicon. It would be awesome if you had some familiarity with quantum physics, mathematics, and programming, but we will ensure that team members will have the opportunity to learn about quantum computing as we grow.
