Job Summary

As a Quantum Engineer at Photonic, you are an integral part of the silicon qubit processor team, responsible for designing and modeling qubit architectures for scalable quantum computing. You will work closely with high-performing teams of product engineers and scientists with expertise spanning device physics to classical computer architecture and compilers. Together, you will develop, prototype, and implement key solutions for our silicon-based quantum computer architecture. You enjoy the thrill of learning new technology and new science while bringing your significant software expertise, open mind, and creativity to tackle key challenges as we build the world’s first truly scalable quantum computing system.

What we need you to do

  • Design and implement magnetic, electric, and optical pulse sequencing to execute high fidelity quantum gates
  • Synchronize distributed control hardware to execute precisely timed experimental sequences
  • Develop and implement protocols for qubit initialization, control, readout, and entanglement
  • Measure devices and present feedback to the design team
  • Translate fundamental physics into engineering specifications
  • Establish and coordinate the process to design, create, and integrate technical components to deliver silicon-based quantum computing
  • Design and execute experiments to make efficient progress toward systems-level improvements
  • Collaborate with the Photonic team to tailor fault-tolerant architectures to real-world silicon devices and develop hardware towards fault-tolerance
  • Explore how quantum devices can optimize key performance factors such as fidelity, connectivity, coherence, scalability, reliability, and efficiency
  • Prototype quantum algorithm ideas, support running proof of concept experiments, collect and analyze data on simulators, emulators or hardware platforms as they become available
  • Write patents and peer-reviewed articles reporting advances where applicable
  • Identify and build collaborations with outside organizations (government labs, academic groups, partners)
  • Support the integration of validated prototype quantum algorithms in our products through effective interaction and communication with the software teams
  • Train, guide, and develop current and additional team members

What you bring to our team

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, or related field
  • 5 years of experience in the field of quantum computing and/or engineering
  • Experimental expertise in high fidelity quantum control and coherence protection strategies such as dynamical decoupling, clock transitions, and decoherence-free subspaces
  • Experience with hardware-timed measurements, FPGA programming, I/Q modulation, and microwave signals processing
  • Experience working at the interface of condensed matter physics and quantum information science
  • Experience with quantum architecture best practices
  • Proficiency in working with Python or other modern programming languages
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to new situations in a rapidly changing research environment
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve engineering problems
  • Outstanding teamwork skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
