Job Summary

Photonic is a rapidly growing early-stage company designing next-generation quantum technologies in silicon. As an Intellectual Property (IP) Analyst at Photonic, you will play an essential role as a member of an IP team responsible for developing a broad patent portfolio to strengthen Photonic’s leadership position in quantum technologies. You are known to be an excellent communicator, researcher, and writer with a passion for technology. You will use your strong scientific background and technical communication skills to assess the strategic opportunity and patentability of IP generated by our quantum development team and facilitate the patent application process.

What we need you to do

  • Consult with scientists during the invention disclosure process, including the preparation of diagrams, background information, and synthesizing invention descriptions for a non-technical audience 
  • Conduct patent searches, literature reviews, and landscape research 
  • Review invention disclosures and provide recommendations on patentability
  • Consult with patent agents as a scientific reference 
  • Support the maintenance and development of Photonic’s IP portfolio
  • Be a technical resource for the business development team  
  • Interface between the technology and business teams in the preparation of technical and project reports for government funding programs 
  • Foster a positive and engaged culture around IP and connect with technical teams to help capture innovative contributions 
  • Participate in continuing education efforts within Photonic to raise awareness on IP-related matters 
  • Develop education resources on the patent process, including guidance on creating clear disclosures and taking due-diligence-ready notes 

What you bring to our team

  • Experience within industry or academia pertaining to nanofabrication, microfabrication, cryo-engineering, or quantum algorithms 
  • A degree or diploma in physics, engineering, applied sciences or related discipline 
  • Ability to communicate with diverse team with a wide variety of skill sets and levels of expertise on highly technical topics 
  • Ability to perform literature searches on specified topics that you may be unfamiliar with
  • Ability to work effectively with teams with dynamic strengths across multiple locations, including remote teams 
  • Willingness to develop as an expert in quantum technologies

Additional qualifications that are an asset:

  • Knowledge of the fundamental legal principles of patents
  • Knowledge of search tools for indexing patent documents
  • Knowledge of quantum computing, quantum technologies, optics and integrated photonics
