We were a Silver Sponsor of the 5th Annual Quantum 2026, Europe’s largest quantum conference, which took place June 16–17, 2026 in London, UK.

Photonic’s Alex van Someren, Executive Chair, spoke on a June 16 plenary panel exploring the intersection of quantum and AI, alongside global leaders from science, industry, and policy.

Some people have seen artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum as being in competition for venture capital and corporate funding, but serious practitioners now see AI and quantum technology as complements. Already machine learning is making error correction and circuit optimization faster. When will quantum start repaying this technological debt of gratitude? What forces are shaping this hybrid future, and what new alliances may define how the two technologies evolve together?

Joining Alex on the panel:

Katie Pizzolato, Vice-president, IBM Quantum Platform

Marco Iannone, Group chief AI officer, Virgin Active

Michelle Simmons, Founder and chief executive, Silicon Quantum Computing

“What makes Canadian Quantum Spin-offs Succeed?”

About the panel:

Many spin-outs founded by members from research labs have and are bringing quantum technology products and services to market. While it can be relatively easy to start an enterprise, there are many aspects and factors that determine their success. What makes a spin-out succeed? What is the “secret sauce” that makes their solutions desirable?

This panel will discuss the trajectory of spinouts, and how to can break the walls and define the path to commercial success.
